Behind The Constraint

What is Koble?

Every morning, a new constraint drops on Koble. Maybe it's five words you have to use. Maybe it's a story in exactly six words. Maybe you can't use the letter E.

You write something under that constraint. It can be fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, whatever feels right to you. Write as much or as little as you want. You have until the end of the day.

Why Constraints

The blank page is often the most challenging part of writing. Constraints take that away. When the rules are specific, you stop worrying about what to write and start figuring out how to write it. That's where the interesting stuff happens.

A word bank gives you five words and asks you to build something around them. A lipogram takes away a single letter and watches your sentences reshape themselves. A forbidden word challenge gives you a topic but bans the five most obvious words, so you have to find new ways in. Each one pushes your writing in a direction it wouldn't have gone on its own.

Your Work Gets Read

The real magic happens in the reveal: when the challenge ends, you discover what everyone else created with the same constraints. Seeing how different people tackle the same puzzle is a thrill in itself. Same five words, completely different pieces. That's the part that surprises people. The constraint is the same. The writing never is.

The best pieces get selected as editor's picks each day. Your work gets read. Not liked, not algorithmically surfaced. Actually read, by people who just wrote under the same constraint and want to see how someone else approached it.

For Everyone

Koble is for anyone who wants to write more. Not just writers. If you journal, used to write, or have been meaning to start, this is a low-pressure way to do it. Whether your last sentence was yesterday or years ago, you'll find a welcome here. One constraint. One day. See what comes out.
